Cleaning a Popcorn Machine

Popcorn machines provide hours of entertainment and loads of delicious popcorn but to keep these machines running smoothly takes careful maintenance and thorough cleaning. The process by which popcorn kernels are heated and popped into the final product leaves for a lot of residue and build up from oils, seasonings and heat that can effect the operation of the machine if not tended to. Regular cleaning of the machine will prevent unnecessary build up and keep your machine popping fresh popcorn continuously.

Before you clean a home use or commercial popcorn machine make sure the machine is turned off and that the components have had enough time to cool off before touching any parts. Popcorn machines generate intense heat and handling a machine that has not had sufficient time to cool can cause burns. Once the machine has cooled enough you can begin by cleaning the kettle with a tough, heavy duty carbon cleaning solution. These solutions will soften and dissolve the carbon on the kettle making it easier for you to remove build up with a sponge or scrub brush.

After applying a cleaning solution to the kettle wait at least 15 minutes before wiping the kettle down. You can use a soft cloth to wipe down the sides and lip of the kettle and a more strong scrub brush for the inside of the kettle where the build up can be dense. It is recommended that you wear latex or rubber gloves when cleaning a kettle and the machine itself. None of the cleaners are harmful but you’ll want to use warm to hot water and to protect your hands a pair of gloves should be worn.

With removable parts you can use soap and water to gently soak the parts before lightly scrubbing down aluminum posts and trays. Don’t let metal parts soak too long and refrain from using abrasive steel wool when washing. For parts that are permanently in place and for machine walls and doors you can often use standard household cleaners that you can use to spray down the machine and wipe with a soft cloth or moist sponge.

Once done cleaning parts and wiping down the exterior let everything dry. Allow sufficient time for everything to dry completely before using your popcorn machine again. If you do a thorough wipe down after each use you will greatly reduce the build up that gradually happens over time and will spare yourself the rigor of a more intense commercial cleaning. Keep an eye out for the kettle and other important parts of the machine as small preventive measures can safeguard against more expensive options in the future.
